A hilly walk offering some wonderful views of the South Downs and the Hampshire and West Sussex coast. From the church car park next to the pond in the picturesque village of Buriton we’ll start with a long uphill walk into Appledown Copse, before continuing south on the Staunton Way, then through more woodland and farmland to the village of Compton. A short time later we’ll stop for lunch at about half-distance, carrying on northeast to Harting Downs. Before turning west on the South Downs Way, we’ll take a detour up Beacon Hill, being rewarded on a clear day with wide, sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and south coast. The last 3 miles are mostly along the South Downs Way, eventually bringing us back to Buriton and a well-earned drink in the Five Bells pub. Please bring a packed lunch, something to sit on if the ground is wet and appropriate clothing/footwear for the terrain and weather.
